Perfected poached eggs, smothered in a delicate and golden hollandaise sauce, all served on a toasted muffin or rosti… welcome to my happy space! First birthed in a New York kitchen around 150 years ago, Eggs Bendict is now a feature on most reputable breakfast menus. After years of searching for the best eggs Benedict in Cape Town, here are my top 3 in no particular order.
Bistro 1682, Steenberg Wine Estate
Breakfast on a wine farm, and only 20 minutes from the city. Surely that’s enough of an incentive to head to the Bistro 1682 at Steenberg Wine Farm? Chef Kerry Kilpin and her team ensure that’s just the start! I love the fact that whilst you wait for your breakfast, you’re given some fresh honey-coated brioche, and as you’ll see above the eggs Benedict is served with a rather generous slab of back bacon, and believe me, it makes all the difference!
Of course Steenberg is more well known for its wine and bubbles, and so you won’t look out of place with a glass of bubbly sitting proudly alongside your plate. Their sparkling Sav Blanc is a lively and refreshing option to pair with your brekkie.
Origin Roastery, De Waterkant
Whenever the phrase ‘good coffee’ is used in Cape Town, Origin Roasting often follows close suit. For a decade Joel and his team have been providing the Mother City with her daily brew. At their Cape Town headquarters in De Waterkant, you can taste their brews, but also enjoy some great meals. Their eggs Benedict is sublime, especially with some their homemade piquant pepper sauce.
Settle down among the collection of hipsters and digital nomads, and enjoy your breakfast with a cup of their daily brew. I love the fact that they have a Barista Academy courses, ranging from one hour to three days. See their website for more info.
Jarryd’s, Sea Point
If you haven’t yet visited their eatery and espresso bar in Sea Point, you need to get yourself to Jarryd’s soon. It’s casual dining, with a touch of class and handful of heart. Owner Jarryd regaled me with his and the restaurant’s history: he speaks faster than most I know, but also knows more about the industry than most I’ve met.
I specifically chose Jarryd’s not only because they have four eggs Benedict options, but also because you can get a ‘slider’ version with miniature versions of all four (see the image above). Your tasting platter options you a sample of the bacon option, smoked salmon, spinach and mushroom, or reuben (their home-cured pastrami). Make sure you try the hash brown substitute. Sexy and scrumptious – a complete winner, and the caring service will most certainly win you over.
