Why book?
For a central London stay that combines a playful panache—thanks to the stylish creations of designer-owner Kit Kemp. The abundance of fabrics, fragrances, and fantastic colors creates a hotel that is designed to both surprise and impress.
Set the scene
A few paces behind London’s Piccadilly Circus, Ham Yard Hotel is inspired by the neighboring vibrant Soho and sophisticated Mayfair. Here, you’ll find a mix of guests, discerning travelers from around the world, well-heeled city professionals seeking a sanctuary for business meetings, and devoted followers of British designer Kit Kemp’s distinctive style. A diverse amalgam who’ve all consciously chosen the Ham Yard Hotel.
The backstory
The hotel’s prime location is steeped in history—after being damaged during the Blitz in the 1940s, the site remained vacant for decades. After a series of unsuccessful proposals to revive it, it was Firmdale Hotels’ 2011 plan to breathe new life into the site that received approval. Founded by hotel pioneers Tim and Kit Kemp in 2014, it became the eighth property in their collection and the flagship in London.
The rooms
Kit Kemp’s colorful and considered design is reflected throughout the 91 rooms and 24 residences—no two are alike. The standout is the Residences, which feature spacious living rooms and fully-equipped kitchens, functioning as stylish aparthotels. My “Residence 19” was a capacious 850 square feet, complete with Kemp’s signature touches, marble and oak bathrooms, a walk-in closet, and electric blinds. A bit lighter on the pocket, the Luxury Terrace rooms have charming balconies for coffee-drinking, complemented by London views. Room configurations include various bed types, sofa beds, cots, and interconnecting options for families and larger groups.
Food and drink
Enjoy British classics with modern touches, in a variety of spaces radiating from the central bar, each well separated for comfort. The fillet steak with wild mushroom sauce and shaved truffle is arguably the best I’ve sampled in London. The Mediterranean-style Orangery is my go-to spot, filled with natural light and designed as an urban escape. The hotel’s collection of artworks pairs signature Liquid Art Cocktails with ten notable pieces.
There are also two exclusive guest-only areas with old-school honesty bars. My favorite quiet spot is the rooftop terrace, sitting beside the fountain beneath ancient olive trees—a true urban sanctuary. With a simple phone call, your British bubbly or Ham Yard Leaves And Light cocktail is on its way up.
The spa
The wellness facilities meet expectations: a large gym and the aptly named Soholistic Spa. During my Deep Tissue Massage, therapist Melissa worked expertly on knots without needing guidance. For groups of up to ten, the spa can be reserved exclusively—a novelty I’ve not seen before. Look out for the “Champagne Is Always A Good Idea,” which includes a deluxe facial, a take-home gift, full access to spa facilities, and Champagne Afternoon Tea.
The neighborhood
With Soho on the doorstep, Ham Yard Hotel offers a coveted spot in central London: West End theaters, excellent dining, and iconic sights are within walking distance. The discreet entrance provides a slick getaway from the stream of tourists, and the reimagined Ham Yard Village offers a village-in-a-city feel, with a pedestrian courtyard surrounded by thirteen boutiques, trendy restaurants, cafés, and lifestyle venues.
The service
Ham Yard’s approach is slower and more intentional, supported by generous staffing that allows for genuine interaction beyond mere service. Staff show authentic interest—a refreshing change from the hurried, often impersonal service at larger hotels. Personal touches included a waiting letter from the head concierge with a list of his most recent London suggestions (a hotel first for me), a server engaging in a lively discussion of wine traditions, and fashion discussions with a charming receptionist.
For families
Ham Yard Hotel is welcoming to all ages. While my stay was child-free, I noticed how relaxed and at home the children appeared (personal friends were quick to tell us the hotel is often their preferred choice for London family visits). Complimentary cots can be added to rooms, and amenities include children’s menus, books, games, mini robes, and bedtime treats like milk and cookies. I only imagine the TVs above the bathtubs being a kid’s favorite.
Eco efforts
Ham Yard’s commitment to sustainability has earned it a BREEAM Excellent rating—achieved through solar panels, energy-efficient systems, strict waste reduction, and sustainable sourcing.
Accessibility
Accessible rooms feature wide doors, turning spaces, accessible tables, roll-in showers, emergency cords, lowered sinks, and grab rails. All public areas, including the entrance, restaurants, lounges, bars, spa, and gym, provide step-free access.
Anything left to mention?
Let me not forget, there’s also a 190-seater theater downstairs, complete with dress circle, and the stunning Dive Bar and an original 1950s bowling alley—you heard correctly! Then, after all the Ham Yard Hotel magic, there’s a good chance that you’ll want to take home a piece of it—thankfully, the Kit Kemp Design Studio in the entrance courtyard is bursting with pieces to take home—look out for the scented candles, playing cards, and then playful sailing scenes on Kit Kemp’s bespoke Wedgewood range.
