Hope for Joburg: Interview with Franck Leya

by Jared

Johannesburg is a complex city and doesn’t always get the best rap. She has been through a lot – and thankfully there are gatekeepers who love and believe deeply in the city. Franck Leya, a qualified tour guide, is one of these and has taught me a lot about Joburg. I’ve now joined him on the following three tours all offered through his company Honest Travel Experiences. Here’s a brief interview that I did with him, talking all things Joburg:

1. Makers Valley Experience⁣
Explore an emerging urban renewal area which has a high concentration of artisans, who’ve come together as the Makers Valley Collective. The tour can include a hands-on experience making something to take home, and also a visit to the special Victoria Yards.⁣

2. Braamfontein Walking Tour⁣
A great chance to explore this bustling suburb on the city’s fringe, where business, students, politics and art play key roles. This tour can also be done via bicycle. ⁣

3. Ponte City Tour⁣
A visit to one of Joburg’s most iconic buildings which featured in the movie District 6. The trip includes a journey to the 55th story for a drink at a bar with unbelievable views of the city. I featured this last year and was delighted to hear some of you have now been!⁣
